Understanding How To Grow Your Wedding Video Business (Or Any Business)

There is a philosophy that motivates growth for almost everything in life. It’s made up of 2 phases, exploring and settling. In the video below I explain it as growing (exploring) and settling in (settling) but you’ll get the point. You can describe this concept in many ways, but lets put it in terms of how to grow your wedding business.

Exploring Phase (grow)

The exploring phase is the idea that we look to learn and re-invent ourselves. We strive to set ourselves apart so that we can own our style and attract customers that love our style. This process involves us not only looking outward towards inspiration (ex. movies, commercials, other wedding filmmakers, etc) but also inward. We need to be honest with ourselves and criticize our strengths and weakness. Without this self-criticism we limit our growth. Once we learn to do this, we begin to look towards the big picture of growing our company. Then the cycle begins again.

Settling Phase (apply)

The Settling phase is when we stop looking and start applying what we have learned. You can have the best ideas, but if you never use them you will never reach the settling phase.  The settling phase takes time because you have a lot of ideas to start working on. Once you iron out all the kinks you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy your re-invention. You are now ready to share your new improved and upgraded style with the world. You’ll know how well it worked when you look at your previous settling phase and compare today’s work with old work.

Putting Them Together

Have you ever met someone who knows big words from big books, but they aren’t successful?
They’re stuck in the exploration phase.

Have you ever met someone who goes to work and comes home like a robot with no direction or goal in life?
They’re stuck in the settling phase.

The growth process of any person or company needs both phases to cycle over and over again in order to grow. Many companies don’t realize they already do this but once they understand how it works, they can control how fast and smart they grow. Here are a few examples of exploring/settling that will help you understand even more:

As the CEO of Pennylane, I try to drive my company to go through each phase every 3 months. This is my recipe but it can be different for everyone. The first step is to become aware that it exists and then use it. Once you start to master it you will see dramatic results in your companies growth over the next year. Interesting method to consciously push different parts of this on a scheduled basis – and also a smart way to push everyone at your company to grow (safely) with you.
